Apple Maps VS Google Maps VS Waze – Interface

When it comes to interface it’s all about preference. Being a navigation app means they’re all bound to look similar and that’s what we have here. The Apple maps are tied to the calendar and weather apps on your smartphone. The calendar helps the app present to you the appointment destination. While the weather app lets you know the present weather condition of where you heading to. Sadly, Google maps and Waze don’t offer this feature.

Apple Maps VS Google Maps VS Waze – Unique features

One unique feature of the Apple maps is the flyover mode. This mode enables users to see how a certain destination looks like without having to travel there. For example, you can see the streets of Manhattan NY in the United States without actually travelling to the country. The flyover mode works in a semi-AR way, which allows the viewer to change in correspondence with your smartphone. Meanwhile, Google maps have a similar feature called the Google Street view.

Though, the Google Street view is quite different from the flyover mode. Aside from the Google Street view, Google maps offer other unique features. During offline mode, the app still offers turn-by-turn navigation. There are voice navigation options for biking, driving and walking. Offline functionality; lets you operate the app despite being offline.

Meanwhile, Waze is also not left behind in terms of unique features. Since it features a social network platform, the navigation app gets live traffic reports from users. I must say this is a very useful feature, nothing beats getting real-time updates about traffic. The Waze also offer a weird feature called police notifications, which lets you know the location of police officers.

Waze received a lot of criticism due to the police notification feature. Chief Charlie Beck of the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) sent a complaint letter to Google in December 2014. He asked that the police indicator feature is taken down claiming it endangers police officers from people with criminal intent. While Google replied; stating that knowing the whereabouts of a police officer promotes safer driving.

Apple Maps VS Google Maps VS Waze – Route Planning

Route planning is very essential for any navigation app. This is because users will like to map out their route before stepping out of their homes. Apple maps offer route planning such as public-transit, driving and walking. While Google maps also offer that and add cycling route planning. The cycling feature is one of the many highlights of Google maps, especially for cyclists.

Apart from giving offering cycling direction, the maps also offer a biking map option. This biking map option highlights green lanes, which should be free of cars. Meanwhile, since Waze is owned by Google, it also offers cycling route planning to its users.
