Kirin 980 VS Snapdragon 845 VS Exynos 9810 – Huawei broke some records when they released their in-house HiSilicon Kirin 980 chipset. For starters, it’s the first chipset built with the 7nm manufacturing process. The Snapdragon and Exynos belong to Qualcomm and Samsung respectively.
Kirin 980 VS Snapdragon 845 VS Exynos 9810 – The CPU
Huawei tweaked the CPU of the Kirin 980, unlike its predecessor. The Kirin 980 features 2x Cortex-A76 clocked at 2.6GHz and another 2x Cortex-A76 clocked at 1.92GHz. Then there is 4x Cortex-A55 which is clocked at 1.8 GHz. This is the first time we’ll see a CPU chipset built this way. Whereas, the Snapdragon 845 and Exynos 9810 follows the normal 4x big and 4x small. The Exynos 9810 features 4x Mongoose 3rd generation (customized Cortex-A75) clocked at 2.9 GHz and 4x Cortex-A55 clocked at 1.9 GHz. While the Snapdragon 845 features 4x Kryo 385 (customized Cortex-A75) clocked at 2.8 GHz and 4x Kryo 385 (customized Cortex-A55) clocked at 1.7 GHz.
According to Huawei, the two big cores of the Kirin 980 are for turbo performance, the medium two cores are for long-term performance. While the small four cores are for maximizing power efficiency. The Kirin 980 is now the first chipset built around the ARM’s Cortex-A76. The Cortex-A76 is said a 35% improvement compared to the Cortex-A75.
Snapdragon 845 is the chipset without Mali-based Graphics Processing Unit. Exynos 9810 comes with the older Mali-G72 GPU while the Kirin 980 features a better Mali-G76 GPU. The Snapdragon 845 has its won Adreno 630 GPU. There is a 30% increase in performance and battery efficiency from the Mali-G72 to Mali-G76.
The most powerful GPU out there now is still the Adreno 640, which is the successor of the Adreno 630. Huawei believes they can close the gap by adding their GPU turbo technology via a software update on phones carrying the Mali-G76.
Benchmark scores can vary depending on the smartphone. This is the benchmark for individual chipsets. The single core of Kirin 980 has a score of 3,389 while the multi-core has a score of 8992. Exynos 9810’s single-core scored 3,668 while the multi-core scored 9,002. Whereas, the Snapdragon 845’s single core got 2,429 and a multi-core score of 8,451.
