This comparison article is about two of the leading mid-range devices in the market – Realme 5 Pro vs Redmi Note 8 Pro. Realme is a sub-brand of Oppo while Redmi is a sub-brand of Xiaomi. Aside from their waterdrop notch, the overall design of both phones is different. The Realme 5 Pro features a front glass with plastic unibody. Its rear camera module is located at the top left side of the phone. Whereas, the Redmi Note 8 Pro comes in a front and back glass (Corning Gorilla Glass 5) design. The rear camera module of the Redmi Note 8 Pro is at the centre instead.
The Redmi Note 8 Pro is heavier weighing 200 grams but surprisingly it is slightly slimmer, measuring 8.8 mm thickness. The Realme 5 Pro, on the other hand, weighs 184 grams and measures 8.9 mm in thickness. The Redmi Note 8 Pro doesn’t come with any resistant that we know of. While the Realme 5 Pro has water splash resistant. If you’re buying the Realme 5 Pro, you can only pick from two colours options; Crystal Green and Crystal Blue. While for the Redmi Note 8 Pro, it comes in Red, Blue, Black and White colours.
Both phones have an IPS LCD display panel which is just about it. The display of the Realme 5 Pro measures 6.3 inches. Whereas, the display on the Redmi Note 8 Pro measures 6.53 inches. Their display both feature 1080 x 2340 pixels resolution, 19.5:9 aspect ratio and is being protected by Corning Gorilla Glass. The display of the Redmi Note 8 Pro features HDR and 500 nits max brightness.
Realme 5 Pro VS Redmi Note 8 Pro – Camera
Both the Realme 5 Pro and Redmi Note 8 Pro comes with a four-camera module setup at the back. Only their main sensor is different though. On the Redmi Note 8 Pro, we have a 64MP f/1.9 main sensor. While the Realme 5 Pro comes with a 48MP f/1.8 main sensors. The sensors are accompanied with an 8MP ultrawide sensor, a 2MP dedicated macro camera and 2MP depth sensor. Both cameras can record 2160p (4K) resolution videos at 30 frames per second. For selfie, the Redmi Note 8 Pro features a 20MP f/2.0 shooter while the Realme 5 Pro comes with a 16MP f/2.0 shooter.
Hardware and Software
Under the hood of the Realme 5 Pro is Snapdragon 712 SoC. While for the Redmi Note 8 Pro is MediaTek Helio G90T SoC. According to MediaTek, the Helio G90T is one of the best mid-range chipset for gaming. But based on paper, the Snapdragon 712 chipset is an equal match to it if not better.
The Redmi Note 8 Pro comes in memory variants of 6/64GB, 6/128GB, and 8/128GB. The storage uses UFS 2.1. The memory variants available for the Realme 5 Pro is 4/64GB, 6/64GB, and 8/128GB. Both devices run on Android 9 Pie with a different custom skin. The Redmi Note 8 Pro runs on MIUI 11 skin while the Realme 5 Pro runs on ColorOS 6 skin.
The Realme 5 Pro packs a non-removable Li-Po 4,035 mAh battery and supports 20W fast charging. For the Redmi Note 8 Pro, it comes with a bigger 4,500 mAh battery. And supports 18W fast charging.
Price & Verdict
The Realme 5 Pro (4/64GB) retails for $290/INR12,999. The 6/64GB cost around INR 13,999. While the Redmi Note 8 Pro (6/64GB) goes for around $228/INR14,999. As you can see from this comparison, the Redmi Note 8 Pro has bigger battery & display, and better camera. However, am not sold on its MediaTek chipset. I still prefer a Snapdragon-powered smartphone. In the end, it all comes down to preference. Both smartphones offer great value for money.
