by Team TC

Samsung Galaxy Buds VS Apple AirPods 2Apple recently announced the second generation of its AirPods. The AirPods 2 comes out just weeks after Samsung released their Galaxy Buds. The company released the Galaxy Buds alongside their latest flagship; Samsung Galaxy S10. Without wasting much time, let’s see which of these two OEM companies have the best wireless buds.

Samsung Galaxy Buds VS Apple AirPods 2 – Design

The packaging case of both the Galaxy Buds and the AirPods 2 are quite similar to an extent. Though the AirPods 2 case is much taller than that of the Galaxy Buds cause of the height of the AirPods 2 being tall. The Galaxy Buds sit loosely in the case. Whereas the AirPods 2 case is designed to keep the AirPods in just one place and it barely gets tangled up.

There is a LED light inside both cases that indicates when the buds are charging. The Galaxy buds also feature another LED light on the outside case for a scenario where you decide to close the case. The Galaxy Buds and the AirPods 2 automatically goes into pairing mode once you open the case and the buds aren’t connected to any device yet. Also, pressing and holding the touchpad on the speaker units of the Galaxy Buds for up to 3 seconds sends it into pairing mode.

The Galaxy Buds are available in three body colour design; Black, White and Neon yellow. Meanwhile, the AirPods 2 is only available in Apple’s iconic white. The Galaxy Buds features IPX2 rating certification for sweat and splash resistant. Whereas, the AirPods 2 doesn’t come with such certification. So if you’re the type that likes taking your buds to the gym, you’re better off with the Galaxy Buds.

Samsung Galaxy Buds VS Apple AirPods – Size

The AirPods case is much smaller in width than that of the Galaxy Buds. While the Galaxy Buds is small in terms of height. However, neither both wireless buds and case are that heavy or big and you shouldn’t have any issues carrying them around with you.

The Galaxy Buds feature three different sizes of ear tips. So you will get the best fit for your ear that goes deep into your ear canal. Whereas, the AirPods 2 features just one ear tip. And you might be unlucky it won’t go deep to your ear canal. There are also a couple of different size wingtips for the Galaxy Buds.

Software & Features

The AirPods 2 integrates easily with the iOS operating system. All you need to do is just open the AirPods case and the device will pop up a dialog that will let you pair them. The Galaxy Buds can easily connect with Samsung Galaxy S10 using this method. But for this to work, you’ll need the Samsung SmartThings app which requires a Samsung account to work. You’ll also need the Samsung wearable app to control the features of the Galaxy Buds. You can also update the software of the Galaxy Buds using the Wearable app.

Samsung Galaxy Buds VS Apple AirPods 2

Overall, the AirPods has a better software integration with iOS than the Galaxy Buds does with Android. This is because Apple owns both the AirPods and the iOS operating system. While Samsung doesn’t own the Android operating system. However, we still believe Samsung could have built a functionality in their Samsung devices to help with the integration.

The sound quality of both wireless buds is fairly okay but not as great as you would have imagined. The AirPods 2 features darker and warmer sound with a fair bit of concentration on the mid-bass as opposed to the high-end. While the Galaxy Buds feature a much more mid-forward sound with emphasis on the high-end and sound rather light and hotter.

The Galaxy Buds with its ear tips and wingtips offers great noise cancellation than the AirPods. With the Galaxy Buds, you will find it difficult hearing what people around you are talking about. The call quality of both wireless buds is virtually the same as they both make use of the same audio codec used by Bluetooth accessories which are clearly outdated and makes one’s voice to be distorted.

Charging & Battery Life

Battery life isn’t a problem for both wireless buds. The AirPods 2 last for about five hours based on the battery capacity on the buds themselves. While the Galaxy Buds last for about seven hours. Their respective case also features battery capacity that can be used to charge up the buds. Overall, including a fully charged case, you could more than 20 hours of usage on both buds.

The AirPods takes lesser time to charge. From 0% to 100%, the AirPods takes about an hour to charge. Whereas, the Galaxy Buds takes more than two hours. The Galaxy Buds supports wireless charging and you can use the Galaxy S10 to charge the case of the Galaxy Buds using a feature called Wireless PowerShare. Unlike the first generation, this new generation of the Apple AirPods supports Qi wireless charging. The case can be charged wirelessly by simply placing it on a Qi wireless charger.

The AirPods 2 and Galaxy Buds despite being wireless buds are far different from each other. That’s because they are used with a different operating system. Overall, the AirPods is still a better wireless bud. Samsung, however, did a great job with the Galaxy Buds but still have a lot to work on. The Samsung Galaxy Buds cost around $130. While the AirPods 2 cost around $190.
