For starters, Facebook Inc. bought Instagram for an estimated $1 billion in 2012. Reports have it that Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg had the intention of buying Snapchat. The owners refused to sell their company and Mark went on to buy Instagram. The deal is regarded as a steal for Facebook as Instagram has grown exponentially ever since then.

Snapchat was created by three former students of Stanford University named Reggie Brown, Bobby Murphy and Evan Spiegel on September 11, 2011. The multimedia messaging app is available on iOS and Android in 22 languages.
Facebook is quite popular that virtually every internet user knows it’s CEO. Mark Zuckerberg launched Facebook on February 4, 2004. He wasn’t the only one though, his fellow Harvard College students (Eduardo Saverin, Andrew McCollum, Chris Hughes and Dustin Moskovitz) at the time were also involved. Facebook is available in over 140 languages, which is why it’s very known all over the world.
Instagram started as an iOS exclusive photo and video-sharing social network app. It was launched in October 2010 by Mike Krieger and Kevin Systrom. An Android version was then later released on April 2012. It’s also available for Windows operating system. Instagram is available in over 39 languages for Android users and over 29 languages for iOS users. Facebook would later buy the company for approximately $1 billion in stock and cash in April 2012.

There is no real way of finding out the true total audience of these social media sites since they don’t usually publish such information. We can only give you a rough estimate of them. Facebook has been existing long before Snapchat and Instagram as the highest number of audience. The social media app has over 2.3 billion monthly active users at the end of September 2018. Whereas, Snapchat has over 186 million daily active users. Meanwhile, Instagram is chasing Facebook in terms of audience as they report to have reached 1 billion monthly active users.
One of the reasons why Facebook is losing its stronghold as the leading social media platform is down to the youths. While Snapchat and Instagram got more popular due to the way they appeal to the youths. According to Snapchat, they reach across 42% of people aged 18-34 years old across the United States. A study shows that 48% of new Facebook profiles created over the last six years are from people aged 45-54 years old. With older people coming on Facebook, the youths might not want their parents to stalking them on social media, which could be the reason why they’re all moving to Instagram and Snapchat.
While Facebook is still regarded as the king of social media, we can’t deny that it’s losing its stronghold of that title. And even their CEO Mark Zuckerberg realises that when he wanted to acquire Snapchat, which didn’t work out. But he later bought Instagram instead, which is a strong competitor of Snapchat right now. So when it comes to popularity, Facebook is still the most popular social media platform. But if you narrow it down to “most popular social media platform for the youths”, then it’s certainly Snapchat and Instagram.
