Xiaomi Mi 9 VS Xiaomi Mi 8 – Design
Last year was all about the normal notch. While 2019, seems to be about teardrop notch. That’s what we getting from the Mi 8 and Mi 9. The Mi 8 comes with the regular notch, which houses the selfie cam and other sensors. While the Mi 9 comes with a teardrop notch that houses just the selfie camera. Other sensors of the Mi 9 is above the notch. The fingerprint sensor is rear-mounted on the Mi 8 while on the Mi 9 it’s under the display.
The body build is the same on both flagships – Front and back Corning gorilla glass with aluminium frame. The Mi 8 features the version 5 of the glass on both its front and back. While the Mi 9 features version 5 at the back and the version 6 at the front. They both measures the same 7.6 mm thickness. The Mi 8’s 175 grams weight is slightly heavier than the Mi 9’s 173 grams.

The display type on both Mi phones is Super AMOLED touchscreen. The Xiaomi Mi 9 screen measures 6.39 inches and features 1080 x 2340 pixels. While the Mi 8 screen measures 6.21 inches and features 1080 x 2248 pixels. HDR-10 and DCI-P3 are featured on both phones.
The Mi 8 is unlucky to be released in a time when the triple camera wasn’t mainstream. The Mi 9 comes with a triple rear camera of 48 MP + 16 MP + 12 MP sensors. While the Mi 8 features dual 12 MP sensors. The Mi 8 can only record 4K videos at 30fps. Whereas, the Mi 9 can record 4K videos at both 30fps and 60fps. Up front, they both sport the same 20 MP selfie shooter with f/2.0 aperture.
Underneath the Mi 8 is the outdated yet still efficient Snapdragon 845 chipset with Adreno 630 GPU. While the Xiaomi Mi 9 comes with the latest Snapdragon 855 chipset with Adreno 640 GPU. The RAM size available on both phones is 6 GB and 8 GB. While the storage size is 64 GB and 128 GB. The Mi 8 has a 256 GB storage variant.
The Mi 9 runs on the latest Android 9.0 Pie with MIUI 10 custom skin out of the box. While the Mi 8 runs on Android 8.1 Oreo with MIUI 9.5 custom skin. This should not put you off from buying the Mi 8 cause Xiaomi has released an update for it to Android 9.0 Pie with MIUI 10 skin.
The Xiaomi Mi 9 comes with a 100 mAh reduced battery capacity. On the Mi 8 is a non-removable Li-Po 3,400 mAh battery. Whereas, on the Mi 9 is a non-removable 3,300 mAh battery. The Mi 8 support 18W fast battery charger. While the Mi 9 comes with better support of 27W fast battery charger and 20W fast wireless charging.
The 6GB/64GB model of the Xiaomi Mi 8 cost around $320. While the same 6GB/64GB model on the Mi 9 goes for around $510. The Xiaomi Mi 9 comes with the newest Snapdragon 855 SoC and the camera is more powerful than that of the Mi 8. That doesn’t mean the Mi 8 is a burst. In fact, the Mi 8 being cheap right now makes it more valuable than the Mi 9.
