Huawei P30 Review, Specs, Features and Price

by Obodoakor Moses

The Huawei P30 is released as the standard flagship for Huawei in 2019. The smartphone comes with the usual traditional siblings like its predecessor; we have the Huawei P30 Pro and Huawei P30 Lite. Of course the Pro version features more specs than this standard version. It still doesn’t mean the P30 should be taken lightly. And it will be a main competitor of the Samsung Galaxy S10 and even the Galaxy S10e which has the same price range as the P30. Let’s take a look at the flagship.

Huawei P30 Design

The design of the Huawei P30 is as premium as you can get in today’s market. It features mixed metal elegant frame with front and back glass offering a stunning appearance. The flagship features a dewdrop notch at the top of the screen and there is an in-display fingerprint scanner.

Sadly, unlike most 2019 flagship that comes with a IP67/IP68 certification rating for water resistance, the Huawei P30 comes with a IP53 certification rating. This means it will survive splash of water but won’t survive when submerged into pool of water like the swimming pool for example. The P30 measures 149.1 x 71.4 x 7.6 mm in dimensions and weighs 165 grams. There are different body colour design to choose from in the Huawei P30, they are Aurora, Amber Sunrise, Breathing Crystal, Black and Pearl White.

Huawei P30 Display

The P30 display is bright with vibrant colours not really overcooked. The display features a 6.1 inches OLED touchscreen with an 85.8% screen-to-body ratio. The display isn’t as great as that of the Samsung Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10 Plus. But OLED technology still makes sure the P30 display gives you close to the best, it features HDR10 and DCI-P3. The display resolution of the P30 is 1080 x 2340 pixels with 422 PPI density.

The camera of the Huawei P30 features a triple camera setup. The main camera is a 40 MP wide-angle sensor. While we have a 16 MP ultrawide and 8 MP telephoto sensors. This setup is similar to the Huawei P20 Pro which was released last year. And we know the P20 Pro has one of the best camera in the market.

The P30 camera improves low-light performance due to its custom RYYB (Red, Yellow, Yellow, Blue) “Super Spectrum” pixel arrangement, which happens is better than the standard RGB (Red, Green, Blue). For selfies, the P30 features a 32 MP wide-angle camera, f/2.0 aperture and Portrait Mode with live bokeh effects.

Performance isn’t an issue for the Huawei P30 thanks to its Kirin 980 SoC. This chip is among the very best in the current market and can handle virtually any task you throw at it. It plays PUBG at the highest graphical setting available and doesn’t lag. Other tasks such photo editing and video editing runs smoothly with ease on this device. The graphics processing unit we have here is Mali-G76 MP10. The P30 is available in only 8 GB RAM variant with internal storage options of 64 GB, 128 GB and 256 GB.

The software of all Huawei devices has always been an issue for users. The Emotion UI makes a lot of tweak to the stock Android user interface, loading it much bloatwares. The P30 runs on Android 9.0 Pie, which is overlaid with EMUI 9.1 skin. The phone comes with Huawei pre-installed apps such as contacts, calendar and music. This doesn’t make any sense cause the traditional Android operating system features all these apps.

User Interface: EMUI 9.1
Sensors: Fingerprint (under display), accelerometer, gyro, proximity, compass, color spectrum

The absence of the Qi wireless charging was a let down for this device. But still, not too many users actually make use of this feature. And Huawei were trying to cut the cost of the device. If you want this feature then you should go for its Pro version (Huawei P30 Pro) instead.

The P30 packs a decent non-removable Li-Po 3650 mAh battery capacity. It supports 22.5W fast battery charging and that should compensate for the absence of wireless charging. It only takes about an hour to get the P30 from 0% to 100%, which isn’t bad. For example, an expensive iPhone XS takes over 2 hours to get to 100%.
